Hico Popcorn Works Celebrates Years of Growth with Continued SBDC Support🍿

HICO, TX -- What began as a vision for Steve and Donna in 2009 has grown into one of Hico’s most recognizable small businesses, thanks in part to years of guidance from the Tarleton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

The couple first met with an SBDC advisor in the fall of 2009 to develop a business plan and explore resources available to new entrepreneurs. During Hico Popcorn Works’ first year, advisors made multiple on-site visits, providing support and helping the business stay focused as it established itself in the community.

As the business continued to grow, Steve and Donna worked closely with Randy Burch, now Associate State Director for the region. They credit the SBDC’s consistent communication over the years, including updates on new services, training opportunities, and business resources, with helping them remain informed and prepared for continued growth.

The SBDC also provided guidance during key milestones. Consultations with Dick Barden helped the owners evaluate important business decisions and develop responsible growth strategies. Later, Susan Banks offered additional insight that helped clarify future goals and strengthen the company’s long-term direction.

Today, Hico Popcorn Works has grown well beyond its original expectations. The business serves a loyal customer base of local residents while attracting visitors who make it a tradition to stop whenever they travel through Hico. Its gourmet popcorn has become part of countless celebrations, including weddings, with many couples returning years later alongside their growing families.

Over the years, Hico Popcorn Works has also expanded its product offerings to include fudge and other sweet treats while serving a diverse customer base that includes churches, hospitals, corporations, community organizations, and individuals across the region.

More than 15 years after opening its doors, Hico Popcorn Works continues to demonstrate how small businesses can thrive through strong community support, strategic planning, and a commitment to quality.
