Tarleton SBDC FAQs

General Questions

What is the Tarleton Small Business Development Center (SBDC)? The Tarleton SBDC is a business assistance program hosted by Tarleton State University and part of the Northwest Texas SBDC Network. We provide no-cost, confidential business advising and low-cost training to entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Who can use Tarleton SBDC services? Our services are available to aspiring entrepreneurs, start-up businesses, and existing small business owners throughout our service area.

Do I have to be a Tarleton student or graduate to use your services? No. Tarleton SBDC services are available to the public. You do not need to be a Tarleton student, alumnus, or faculty member to work with us.

What types of businesses do you help? We assist businesses in a wide range of industries, including retail, restaurants, agriculture, construction, healthcare, service-based businesses, manufacturing, online businesses, and more.

Is there a cost to work with the Tarleton SBDC? Business advising is provided at no cost. Some workshops, seminars, or special training programs may have a small registration fee.

Are my meetings and business information confidential? Yes. All counseling sessions and business information shared with Tarleton SBDC advisors are confidential.

Business Questions

I have an idea for a business. Where do I start? Start by scheduling an appointment with one of our business advisors. We can help you evaluate your idea, identify your target market, choose a business structure, and create a plan for moving forward.

Do I need a business plan before meeting with you? No. Many clients come to us with only an idea. We can help you build a business plan from the ground up.

Can you help me register my business? Yes. We can help you understand the steps involved in registering your business, obtaining permits, applying for an EIN, and meeting state and local requirements.

My business is already open. Can you still help me? Absolutely. We work with established businesses that want to grow, improve operations, increase profitability, hire employees, or expand into new markets.

What funding options can you help me explore? We can help you evaluate options such as: Traditional bank loans SBA loan programs Lines of credit Grants Investors Microloans

Do you help with minority-owned, women-owned, and veteran-owned businesses? Yes. We work with all entrepreneurs and can help identify certifications, programs, and resources available for women-owned, minority-owned, and veteran-owned businesses.

Can you help if I want to start an online business? Yes. We can help you evaluate e-commerce platforms, create an online sales strategy, and market your business digitally.

Trainings & Events

Do you offer workshops or classes? Yes. Tarleton SBDC regularly offers workshops, webinars, and training sessions on topics such as starting a business, marketing, bookkeeping, taxes, financing, and business planning.

How do I find upcoming workshops and events? You can view upcoming events on our website or follow us on social media for the latest updates.

Are workshops offered online or in person? We offer both in-person and virtual training opportunities, depending on the topic and schedule. You can register for those on our website or through the link on our social media posts.

Appointments & Contact Information

How do I schedule an appointment? You can schedule an appointment by completing the contact form on our booking page, calling our office, or emailing us directly.

What are your office hours? Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Can I meet with an advisor virtually? Yes. We offer both in-person and virtual advising appointments.

What if I am not located in Stephenville? We do reach businesses in surrounding areas, including Stephenville, Brownwood, Dublin, Comanche, Glen Rose, Granbury, Mineral Wells, Weatherford, Decatur, and any town in between. If you are elsewhere, you may still qualify for services through the Tarleton SBDC or another office within the Northwest Texas SBDC Network. Contact us and we will help connect you with the appropriate resource.

How quickly can I expect to hear back after contacting you? Most inquiries receive a response within 1–2 business days. If we miss your call, feel free to leave a voicemail. If you are elsewhere, you may still qualify for services through the Tarleton SBDC or another office within the Northwest Texas SBDC Network. Contact us and we will help connect you with the appropriate resource.
